Autumn, also known as fall in North American English, is the temperate season of transition from summer into winter. In the temperate zones, autumn is the season during which most crops are harvested and deciduous trees lose their leaves. It is also the season where days get shorter and cooler, the nights get longer and increasing rain in the Pacific Northwest brings an end to the summer drought.
Definition of the seasons generally, is somewhat flawed because it assumes that the seasons are all of the same length, and begin and end at the same time throughout the temperate zone of each hemisphere.
The fall of the year is also very busy for me and is my favorite time of year. Temperatures cool off and biting insects slow down or disappear. The vegetation of many plants takes on its fall colors. While our fall colors may not be as impressive as in other parts of the country, they still treat the eye to some pretty magnificent displays. Fall color is more brilliant on plants in drier areas like talus slopes or in general everywhere in drier years.
