Spring is the winter into summer transition season of temperate zones.
Astronomically, some countries consider spring to begin with the spring equinox (around March 20 in the northern hemisphere, and September 23 in the southern hemisphere), and ends with the summer solstice (around June 21 in the Northern hemisphere and December 21 in the Southern hemisphere).
The hemisphere begins to warm significantly and plant growth begins anew. Snow begins to melt, and rivers and streams swell with runoff and spring rains.
Most flowering plants bloom this time of year, in a succession beginning, for some species, when snow is still on the ground, and continuing into early summer. In normally snowless areas “spring” can be as early as February depending on weather, and we do have a few species in the Pacific Northwest that begin to grow or bloom in late February of warmer years.
I generally spend less time at higher elevations in the spring, preferring to concentrate more on photographing wildflowers as they come into season and preparing for the summer hay harvest and hiking season.
